DeRolph vs State of Ohio (1997)

What was the ruling?

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled 4–3 that the state's funding system failed to provide adequate resources for quality education across the state. The court also found that the system violated the Ohio Constitution's 'Thorough and Efficient' clause.

What was the response?

The state created a task force to develop a new school funding formula. The General Assembly changed Ohio's school funding system several times.

What was the outcome?

The court ended the litigation in 2003. The subsequent changes to the system have not been challenged in court.

Why was the case important?

The case demonstrated the importance of adequate school funding to ensure equal educational opportunities for all students

And another legislative task force was born…

Attached is the "Member's Brief" on DeRolph vs State of Ohio. It goes into detail about the decision and the subsequent HB's and SB's enacted to answer the decision.
